NEW ORLEANS — Alan Frey, a women's basketball assistant coach at Loyola University New Orleans in 2025-26, was named head coach on April 1 at NCAA Division I Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La.

In his only season with the Loyola women, Frey helped the Wolf Pack go 25-5, win the Southern States Athletic Conference regular-season championship (17-1), and reach the second round of NAIA nationals. The Wolf Pack were No. 16 in the final NAIA coaches poll and produced a school-record 17-game winning streak.

"We were incredibly fortunate to have Alan Frey on our staff this past season," Loyola head coach Kellie Kennedy said. "His contributions, spanning from player development to advanced analytics and strategy, were instrumental to our success. Alan is an exceptional coach and person, and while we will miss him, I'm thrilled to see the impact he'll undoubtedly make at Northwestern State."

Frey succeeded Anna Nimz, who departed Northwestern State after six seasons to become head coach at the University of North Alabama.

Northwestern State this past season was 18-14 — the program's most victories in 10 seasons — and 14-8 (fifth place out of 12 teams) in the Southland Conference.

Frey was an assistant coach for 18 seasons at Tulane University and was the 1997 AAU National Coach of the Year with the Kenner Angels. Frey is a 1988 graduate of the University of New Orleans.
