ROME, Ga. – Both Loyola Wolf Pack women's tennis teams were victorious on Saturday as they concluded play at the ITA Cup, the annual fall championships for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
"I'm very proud of how our girls fought and competed all week," said head coach Matt Llewellyn. "They showed great toughness and resiliency against the nations top players. Every match in this tournament comes down to just a few points. The learning experience we can share with our team is invaluable."
Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez went 2-1 at the tournament, dropping a close first match but winning the next two. On Saturday, they were matched up with Teodora Jovic and Nicole Viljoen from Union College (Ky.), taking the match in straight sets: 7-5, 6-3.
Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salgueiro-Estela faced Marta Calvo Larraz and Hannah Lindeboom from William Woods University, both looking for their first win of the tournament. In the end, Ponce and Salgueiro-Estela pulled out the victory in a third set super tiebreak, 6-6 (7-2), 6-4, 10-7.
"Overall, it was a great week," said Llewellyn. "We represented Loyola and took our program to another level. We'll keep building this fall and carry this momentum into our spring season."
