Big second quarter sparks Wolf Pack

Box Score

The Loyola Wolf Pack outscore Middle Georgia by 24 in the second quarter en route to a 27-point win Thursday

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team continued their dominant winning streak Thursday, defeating Middle Georgia State 93-66 in The Den for their four straight win. The victory moved the Pack to 13-4 overall and 7-2 in Southern States Athletic Conference play, and they've now won their last four games with a 24-point average winning margin.

Loyola looks to keep things rolling Saturday when Brewton-Parker travels to New Orleans for a noon matchup.

The game stayed close through the first quarter with four ties and three lead changes in the first 10 minutes. Tay Cannon scored four points out of the gate and Sandra Cannady made four free throws to help the Pack take a 9-5 lead in the first four minutes. After MGA took its first lead, 10-9, Cannady converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to switch the lead for the second time. Tera Snell hit two shots from the charity stripe moments later, but the Knights grabbed a 19-16 advantage with two minutes left and held that lead on the scoreboard when the quarter ended, 24-19.

The Wolf Pack needed a spark in the second quarter and they got it from Jazmene McMillan. The sophomore played most of the frame and scored nine points with four assists and a couple of rebounds, but her seven points early in the frame sparked a dominating 10 minutes of play for Loyola. After Kennedy Hansberry scored to start the second, McMillan made a 3-pointer and two field goals in a one-minute span to put Loyola up 31-26 with 7:30 until halftime.

The Pack also caught fire from the 3-point line, hitting five of their six attempts and starting the quarter 4-for-4. Kate Petrovic followed up McMillan's made 3, then Sydni Tangle made two straight from 3 to extend the score to 39-28. Petrovic made another 3-pointer and 10 second-quarter points by Hansberry sent Loyola into the locker room up 19, 54-35.

It was much of the same in the second half for the Wolf Pack, outscoring the Knights 39-31 in the final 20 minutes. Taylor Thomas scored all nine of her points in the second half, too, making six free throws and connecting on a 3-pointer. Also, Cannady's efforts in the third and fourth quarters helped her record her sixth double-double of the season, pulling down eight rebounds and scoring six points in the half.
