Box Score The 24th-ranked Wolf Pack women's basketball team had a shot on the rim in the final second of Thursday's game against Stillman College, but the Tigers pulled off the upset
NEW ORLEANS – The 24th-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team lost a tough one Thursday night, dropping a 53-52 game to Southern States Athletic Conference foe Stillman College at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Loyola is now 9-4 overall and 3-2 in SSAC play, and it'll host Mobile on Saturday at noon in The Den for another league matchup.
The Pack's slow start put them in another early hole, scoring just 15 points through the first 18-plus minutes of the game. After the Tigers took a quick 3-0 lead, Sandra Cannady got Loyola on the board with a couple of free throws, but Stillman was able to push its lead out to 12-5 midway through the opening frame. The Tigers would end up leading 16-10 after the first 10 minutes.
Stillman pushed its lead to double digits early in the fourth quarter, quickly taking a 24-10 advantage with six and a half minutes left until halftime. The Tigers' largest lead of 15, 28-13, came with 3:30 left, but that was the last points they would score in the first half. Loyola scored the final eight points thanks to five points from Tay Cannon to make it a 28-22 game at the half.
Loyola continued to fight from behind in the second half, too, as Stillman held a lead of at least four points the entirety of the third quarter. A 3-pointer from Jazmene McMillan and two free throws by Liz Critton kept the Pack in the game, though, trailing Stillman 43-40 entering the final quarter.
Cannon and Kennedy Hansberry each scored in the opening minutes of the fourth, then a 3 by Kate Petrovic tied the game for the first time since the game was scoreless. After Stillman retook the lead, McMillan tied the game once again with three-plus minutes left, Cannady gave Loyola its first lead of the game moments later, 51-49. A free throw and a 3-pointer put the Tigers back ahead, 53-51, with 51 seconds on the clock, and after one Cannady free throw cut the score to 1, Cannon's last-second attempt at a game-winner rolled off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
