Box Score

The 22nd-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team took down Brewton-Parker in overtime Saturday, beginning Southern States Athletic Conference 2-0

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team needed overtime Saturday afternoon, but the No. 22 Pack earned the 88-84 Southern States Athletic Conference win over the Brewton-Parker Barons. The win moves Loyola to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in SSAC play, and it's next scheduled to play at Xavier on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.

Behind eight first-quarter points from Kennedy Hansberry, Loyola took an early 16-11 lead after 10 minutes of play. The senior scored five straight points in a two-minute span, making two free throws and two field goals to put the Wolf Pack ahead 9-8. After Sandra Cannady put the Pack up again, 11-10, Taylor Thomas and Hansberry each had scores in the final minutes to help build a five-point lead.

Brewton-Parker fought back in the second quarter, winning the frame 22-14 to take a 33-30 lead over Loyola into halftime. Jazmene McMillian gave Loyola its largest lead of the half, 17-11, with a free throw to start the second quarter, but the Barons quickly tied it with eight straight points less than three minutes into the frame. Free throws by Tay Cannon and Liz Critton, as well as a made shot by Sydni Tangle kept the Pack ahead, 24-21, then consecutive scores by Cannon and Thomas made it a 28-23. BPC, however, scored 10 of the final 12 points to take the halftime lead.

The Barons had their largest lead of seven, 41-34, four minutes into the third quarter, but the Pack went on a 9-0 run to regain the lead, 43-41, during the next three minutes of game time. Critton converted an and-1 opportunity to start the run and Tangle's 3-pointer a few moments later tied the game. The two teams traded baskets during the final two and a half minutes, as Cannady, Hansberry and McMillian all scored to make it a 49-48 BPC.

The Wolf Pack caught fire to start the fourth quarter with 12 points through three-plus minutes of action. Tera Snell and McMillian combined for the first eight points, then Cannady and Thomas made back-to-back shots to push Loyola's lead to 61-52. The Pack held an eight-point lead with two minutes to play, but Brewton-Parker, once again, didn't go down quietly. It scored seven straight points in less than 90 seconds to cut the score to 69-68, then a lay-up with six seconds to go sent the game to overtime.

Loyola outscored BPC 18-14 in the extra period and the team was led by Cannady's seven points, five of which came from the free-throw line. McMillian put Loyola up by three with a 3-pointer, and two points each from Cannady and Thomas made it a 79-76 advantage halfway through the frame. Loyola's lead got as high as seven, 85-78, before Cannady iced the game with two more free throws.
