Box Score The No. 25 Wolf Pack completed a two-game season sweep over Southeastern Baptist Sunday, remaining undefeated with three games to play this week
LAUREL, Miss. – The No. 25 Loyola Wolf Pack took down Southeastern Baptist College for the second time this season, winning 77-51 Sunday in Laurel, Mississippi. After not playing since Jan. 3, the Wolf Pack improved their record to 5-0 for the second consecutive season with the win.
The Wolf Pack started slowly in the first quarter but used a big second quarter to take a 35-21 lead by halftime. Southeastern Baptist led Loyola 11-8 late in the opening quarter, but a 3-pointer by Jazmene McMillan and free throws by Tay Cannon and Morgan Hervey gave Loyola a 15-13 lead with two minutes left in the quarter. Shawna Torregano picked up a steal and scored to give Loyola a 17-13 advantage, and the Wolf Pack closed the first quarter on an 11-2 run to hold a 17-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Loyola kept its run going to start the second quarter, extending it to a 23-6 run midway through the frame to take a 29-15 lead. Torregano's 3-pointer made it a 24-15 game three minutes into the second, and the Wolf Pack made five free throws to help build the double-digit lead. The Wolf Pack held the Chargers to just eight second-quarter points, taking the 14-point lead into the break.
The Wolf Pack continued their dominance in the third quarter, outscoring SBC 28-11 to take a 63-32 lead into the final 10 minutes of play. Loyola started the quarter on a 12-5 run before SBC hit two consecutive 3-pointers. Chelsea Gray and Kennedy Hansberry got the scoring going, then Tera Snell, Cannon and McMillian contributed to help build a 46-26 lead. Torregano nailed three 3-pointers in the final 3:16 of the quarter to help push Loyola's lead to 31, as Loyola went on a 14-0 run during that time to put the game out of reach for the Chargers.
SBC did outscore Loyola 17-14 in the final 10 minutes, but the Wolf Pack had complete control of the contest.
Loyola will hit the road again Tuesday, traveling to Mobile for the team's first Southern States Athletic Conference game.
Pack Facts
The Wolf Pack is 5-0 for the second straight season, and it's the fourth time the team has started with five straight wins to open a season since Kellie Kennedy took over the program prior to the 2008-09 season.
Four Wolf Pack players scored in double figures, led by Shawna Torregano and Tay Cannon, with each scoring 18. Kennedy Hansberry and Morgan Hervey each added 10 points.
Torregano logged career highs in points, as well as rebounds (6), assists (4) and steals (4).
Hervey's 10 points were a career-high for the freshman.
Cannon's 18 points are a season-high. She also matched her season highs in assists (3) and blocks (2).
Chelsea Gray and Tera Snell each grabbed 10 rebounds. Gray matched her career-high, set earlier this season, while Snell set a new personal best.
Jazmene McMillan added seven rebounds and three assists, both career-highs for the freshman, to her eight points.
Hansberry tied her season-high in rebounds with seven, as did Jada Farrell, whose seven boards were a career-best.
