Loyola stays undefeated with a road win over SUNO

Box Score

The Wolf Pack has claimed six wins in the last seven games against their crosstown rival

NEW ORLEANS – For the second straight night, the Loyola Wolf Pack needed overtime to claim a win. On Tuesday, Loyola and Southern University New Orleans played an extra five minutes, as the Wolf Pack pulled out the 94-88 win over the Knights.

The Wolf Pack started the game red-hot, taking an 11-0 lead through the first four minutes of play. Terry Smith Jr. scored eight of his game-high 26 during that run, too.

After Loyola pushed the lead to 20-8, SUNO started to claw its way back into the contest. The Knights cut it to single digits eight minutes into the game, but Loyola kept a cushion until it took a 39-31 lead into the break.

Besides a few small runs by SUNO, the Wolf Pack kept that same cushion throughout most of the second half, as the Knights never led in the game and only tied the game at the end of the regulation to send it to overtime. Loyola had a 12-point lead with less than six minutes to go, but the host team battled back to force the extra period.

In overtime, SUNO made the first shot to take its first lead of the game, then Zach Wrightsil hit two free throws and a field goal to regain the lead 82-80. A combination of Wrightsil, Smith and Tim Cameron had Loyola's final 11 points to close out the game.

After back-to-back games, Loyola will get a few days off before hosting Huston-Tillotson Friday at 7 p.m. in The Den.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Stacy Hollowell

"It was a hard fought game in a rowdy environment. It was a nice test for our guys to be on the road, be heckled and fight through it. We overcame another injury with guys out sick. Some guys had to step up and take on extra minutes, and it was nice to get out of there with a road win. I think it'll pay off for us down the road."
