Box Score Fueled by a 20-0 run in a 26-6 second quarter, Loyola picks up their 10th win of the season
NEW ORLEANS – Trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball team roared back and defeated Stillman College 70-65 Thursday night in The Den.
The visitors opened the game by claiming the tip-off before turning it over to the Wolf Pack (10-4, 4-1 SSAC), as Paige Franckiewicz struck first from three. However, the Tigers (5-6, 1-3 SSAC) would reclaim the lead by scoring two straight, a lead they would hold through the remainder of the quarter. At the end of the first 10 minutes of play, Loyola would trail by 12, down 27-15 as they headed into the second quarter.
While the Pack would begin to get their offense rolling in the opening minutes of the period, Stillman added five quick points, taking a 32-19 lead. Loyola quickly took over the game, opening up a 20-0 run with a pair of scores from Tay Cannon before the freshman eventually gave the Pack the lead on two free throws. The Wolf Pack defense forced eight second-quarter turnovers, holding the visitors to six points while scoring 26 of their own, putting the home team up 41-33 at the halftime break.
It was a defensive third period as neither team was able to get any offense rolling. While the Pack chipped in 11 points the Tigers added 12 to make it a seven-point game. Heading into the final quarter of the evening the home team would stand in front 52-45.
The game's leading scorer, Franckiewicz opened the fourth with a make from beyond the arc, but the visitors would quickly respond with two of their own. Stillman began cutting into the Pack's advantage, with the game sitting at 60-56 with just over six minutes left on the clock.
With just minutes left in regulation, the visitors made it a three-point game as Loyola held a 63-60 lead. The game would remain tight through the end, with the Pack claiming their 10th win of the season by a final tally of 70-65.
The Wolf Pack will remain at home this weekend and host another conference foe, taking on Mobile Saturday, January 5 at 2 p.m. in The Den
Pack Facts
The team was led in scoring by junior Paige Franckiewicz who dropped 18 points, the seventh game she's hit double-digits in the score column.
For the third consecutive game, Presley Wascom scored in double figures, adding 13 while going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
The sophomore leads the team in free throw percentage at 91.7 percent.
Six members of the team recorded a block today including senior Megan Worry, who now owns 25 blocks on the season and has recorded one in 11 of her 14 games played.
