Box Score Loyola defends The Den and takes sole possession of second place in the conference standings
NEW ORLEANS – In the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Game of the Week the Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball team took down Brewton-Parker 66-60 Saturday afternoon in The Den.
The Wolf Pack (16-5, 10-2) jumped on the board with a deep three-pointer from Paige Franckiewicz, retaking the lead again 5-4 on a layup from Kamille Cooper just three minutes into the game. Kaila Anthony would extend the home team's lead to 10-4 on a make from deep and layup on consecutive possessions before Brewton-Parker (13-7, 9-3) brought it back to a one-point game at 10-9. The visitors would inch out in front by the first buzzer of the game, taking a 14-13 lead into the second quarter.
Loyola began the next period with an 8-0 run, with scores from Cooper, Anthony and Megan Worry. The Pack defense buckled down, keeping the Lady Barons off the scoreboard for the first five minutes of the quarter. However, the visitors would eventually claim a lead on a three pointer, 24-21, before a score down low from Cooper put the Pack out in front again with under a minute remaining. A last-second bucket from Worry set the halftime score at 28-25 in favor of the Wolf Pack.
The defenses controlled the game for the start of the third period, before the pack scored nine quick points in the final few minutes. Buckets from Anthony and Breyah Richardson pushed Loyola over the 40-point mark, with the team stepping out in front by nine, 43-34, to start the final quarter.
Anthony opened the fourth converting an and-one play, with a pair of free throws from Tay Cannon giving the Pack their largest lead of the game at 14. Loyola would hold on to their double-digit lead for most of the quarter, until a last-minute comeback effort from the Lady Barons brought the final score to 66-60, giving the Pack their 10th SSAC win of the season.
The Wolf Pack will hit the road next week and bring an end to their four-game homestand, traveling to Stillman College next Thursday, January 31 for a 5:30 p.m. game.
