Women's basketball rallies in second half for 62-53 victory at OLLU

Alissa O'Dell scored 20 points and Jaylee Womack 14 to lead Loyola

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — NAIA All-American Alissa O'Dell scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the third quarter Saturday to rally No. 16 Loyola University New Orleans to a 62-53 women's basketball victory against Our Lady of the Lake in the season opener for both teams.

The Wolf Pack trailed 30-27 at halftime, then took control by outscoring the Saints 22-10 in the third. O'Dell was 5-of-6 from the floor in that period, including a 3-pointer.

O'Dell's basket at 5:51 of the third put Loyola ahead to stay at 37-35 and started a 10-0 run.

Jaylee Womack — a graduate student in her Loyola debut after transferring from Tulane — scored 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and had three steals and a block. Caitlin Travis scored 10 points to increase her Loyola career total to 997, and Chandler Caver, last season's SSAC Freshman of the Year, scored eight points and made her first three shots from the floor.

Leading Loyola with seven rebounds apiece were returnees Kaylee Dublin and Ava Shields — career highs for both — and freshman Anna Richerson.

Mia Singstock, a junior in her OLLU debut after transferring from Southern Nazarene, scored 15 points, and Phelan Sigers scored 10. Paige Chauncey grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Saints had advantages in field-goal accuracy (35 to 33 percent) and 3-pointers made (9-4), but Loyola countered with a plus-9 turnover ratio, committing 15 and gaining 24. Loyola gained 15 turnovers in the second half. Loyola made 14-of-22 free throws to OLLU's 2-of-6.

Next for Loyola will be two road exhibitions against NCAA Division I opponents: 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at neighbor Tulane and 7 p.m. Thursday at LSU. The Wolf Pack's next regular-season game will be the home opener: 2 p.m. Nov. 8 against the College of Biblical Studies at The Den.
