Loyola Drops Tough Game With No. 18 William Carey

Box Score

16-point games from both Myles Burns and Zach Wrightsil aren't enough to push the Pack over the Crusaders

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's basketball team hosted their fifth ranked opponent of the season, but were unable to pull off the win against No. 18 William Carey Monday night in The Den.

The Crusaders (14-5, 10-1 SSAC) scored first on a mid-range jumpshot, but Tre'Von Jasmine responded with a basket in the paint to tie the game at 2-2. The game would remain close for the opening minutes of the first half, with the Wolf Pack (11-7, 6-5 SSAC) taking an 8-7 lead after a putback from Myles Burns at the 15-minute mark. The Pack trailed 20-17 with five minutes remaining in the first half, before William Carey scored eight unanswered points, eventually taking a 36-22 lead into halftime.

Carey began the second half with an 11-2 run, extending their advantage to 47-24, the largest lead of the game. The teams would trade baskets for most of the half while Loyola attempted to chip away. The Wolf Pack whittled the deficit to 12 points with under three minutes remaining, but were unable to close the gap, as they fell 67-54.

Loyola will remain at home this week, taking on Florida College for the second time this season on Thursday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m. in The Den.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Stacy Hollowell

"William Carey came out and guarded as physically as we thought they would, and did a great job on the glass. We were stagnant offensively but I thought we guarded hard. Too many 50-50 balls went their way, some nights the ball doesn't fall for you, and unfortunately tonight was one of those nights."
