The Wolf Pack defeated LSU-Shreveport 9-0 but fell to No. 9 LSU-Alexandria 7-2.
ALEXANDRIA, La. - On a rainy day in Alexandria, La., the Loyola University New Orleans women's tennis team took on No. 9 LSU-Alexandria as well as LSU-Shreveport in a Saturday doubleheader.
The Wolf Pack move to 4-5 on the season after falling 2-7 to the hometown Generals and shutting out the Pilots from Shreveport 9-0.
On the first match of the day with LSU-A, head coach Kyle Russell said, "we came out extremely flat in the doubles which we obviously can't do against against a top 10 team and expect to win. The girls responded very well in singles however and I saw the caliber of tennis that we are capable of playing."
The Pack dropped the three doubles matches, but Manuela Alban (FR/Quito, Ecuador ) and Arianna Pepper (SO/Arequipa, Peru), who have both impressed on the court so far in their first seasons with Loyola, continued their success today in singles play. Pepper scored the first point for the Pack with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court three, then Alban picked up the second point on court two.
Gabrielle Terranova (FR/Metairie, La.) was able to force a third set in her match on court five after dropping the first set, but she ended up dropping the close match 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
"Arianna and Manuela made it look routine beating quality opponents," said Russell. "Gabby [Terranova] also fought deep into a third set so overall it was a good day."
In the second match of the day against LSU-Shreveport, rain forced the teams to play pro sets in singles play instead of just in doubles. The Wolf Pack were able to take care of business easily in the match, winning 9-0.
The next match for Loyola comes in a conference matchup with NAIA No. 6-ranked William Carey, who leads the SSAC at 4-0. The match in Hattiesburg, Miss., is slated for March 7 at 2 p.m.
