MOUNT VERNON, Ga. — The Wolf Pack reclaimed the lead midway through the third quarter and never looked back, defeating Brewton-Parker 81-70 in the Gillis Gymnasium Thursday afternoon.
Loyola (16-4, 8-1) jumped on the scoreboard quickly to begin the contest thanks to two offensive rebounds and ensuing layups by Kamille Cooper. After the Lady Barons (4-15, 2-9) took a four point lead on a three pointer, Megan Worry and Zoie Miller responded with two quick steal and scores each, setting the game even for one of nine times this evening. As the first quarter came to a close, the home team inched out to a two point lead, putting the Pack down 21-19 heading into the second period of play.
The two teams came out trading quick baskets, with Di'Mond Jackson drawing the score even at 23-all after a turnover by Brewton-Parker. After only six points between each team hit the scoreboard in the first four minutes of play, the Pack claimed the lead on two free throws by Jackson. To close out the first half, shots by Miller, Breyah Richardson and Chelsea Gray would maintain Loyola's lead, setting the scoreboard at 41-35 heading into the break.
The Lady Barons came out firing, scoring eight unanswered points to claim a quick 43-41 lead. With just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter, Miller found Paige Franckiewicz for a three before the home team responded with two of their own. The Pack would march down the court and add two quick points from Jackson, followed by two Brewton-Parker free throws and a quick score by Miller for the Pack. The call and response would continue for most of the third quarter, before Loyola slowly inched ahead in the final minutes. Fouled on a layup which fell for two, Jackson hit the ensuing free throw to put the Pack up eight. However, as the clock reached zero for the third quarter, the Lady Barons brought the score closer to 61-57.
To open the final quarter, Miller found Worry for a quick score to keep the offense rolling. Keeping Brewton-Parker at bay for the remainder of the game, the Pack held a six-point lead or higher for the final four and a half minutes of action, claiming their 16th win on the season and 12th in the last 13 games.
