On Wednesday night, The Loyola University New Orleans men's basketball team traveled to Alexandria, La. to take on preseason No. 2-ranked LSU-Alexandria.
The Wolf Pack (2-2) kept the score close until the second half, where the Generals (2-0) closed out the half strong to grab the 87-71 win.
Loyola played well in the first half, shooting 50% (16-32) on all field goal attempts and out-rebounding LSUA 18-12. The score was close, with the visiting Wolf Pack holding an early 10-11 lead before the Generals opened up an 8-0 run to take their largest lead at the half at 25-15. Nick Parker (SR/Port Allen, La.) led Loyola with 13 points and three assists on 5-9 (55.6%) from the floor and 3-6 (50%) from beyond the arc. But LSUA took a 45-40 lead into halftime, with senior forward Brandon Moss leading the home team with 14 points, only missing one of his eight shots as the team shot 18-34 (52.9%) total for the half.
But the visitors would not go away quietly, opening up the half with a 6-0 run, including two baskets by Tre'Von Jasmine (JR/Edgard, La.), to take early second half lead at 46-45. Jasmine would finish with 16 points on 6-14 (42.9%) shooting, second most on the team.
The Generals would control the tempo for most of the remainder of the second half, outscoring the Wolf Pack 42-25 after the 6-point spurt by the visitors to start the half, including an 8-2 run to close out the game. The Wolf Pack shot just 33% from the field in the second half, bringing its FG% for the game to 41.5% on 27-65 shooting. LSUA shot 29-57 for 50.9%.
Loyola kept up good rebounding numbers from the first half, finishing with 38 total rebounds, including 15 offensive boards, compared to just 31 for the home team. Terry Smith, Jr. was a big reason behind that, grabbing four offensive rebounds and nine total for the game, just one shy of a double-double as he also finished with 12 points.
Nick Parker was a bright spot for the Wolf Pack, finishing with 22 points, four steals and three assists. Parker also finished with six rebounds, which was tied for second-highest on the team with Ethan Turner (JR/Covington, La.), who had also had six to go along with his two points and two assists.
For the Generals, Brandon Moss scored a game-high 24 points on 9-11 shooting after also leading last year's matchup between the two teams with 19 points. Jordin Williams was second on the team with 19 points, while William Claiborne added 17.
