MOBILE, ALA.- The Loyola University New Orleans Men's Basketball team traveled to Mobile for a Southern States Athletic Conference game against the Mobile University Rams.
It was a defensive battle and the Wolf Pack prevailed behind So. G Nick Parker (Port Allen, La./Port Allen), 54-44.
Both teams struggled to score early in the game and Loyola trailed 6-2 with 14:44 remaining. Parker hit two free throws and Jr. G Jalen Gray (New Orleans, La./Brother Martin) made the Wolf Pack's first field goal of the game with 11:03 remaining to tie the game 6-6.
That started a 20-7 run that sent both teams to their respective locker rooms with the Wolf Pack ahead 22-13.
Mobile made a free throw to start the second half before Parker sparked an 8-0 with a three-pointer. Loyola led 30-14 before the Rams cut their deficit to 32-24 with 10:19 remaining.
The Wolf Pack, however, were dominant over the next six minutes and went on a 19-4 run to take an astounding 51-28 lead. Loyola only scored three points over the last three minutes, but cruised regardless to a 54-44 victory.
It was a rough night shooting for both teams as the Wolf Pack shot 15-of-48 (31.3%) from the field and 5-of-20 (25%) from beyond the arc. However, they held Mobile to 14-of-51 (27.5%) and 2-of-16 (12.5%) while forcing 21 turnovers.
Parker, who won SSAC Player of the Week last week, was the only player in double digits for Loyola with 23 points. Gray and So. C Nate Pierre (Folsom, La./Covington) each added nine points.
The victory was the first time that Loyola defeated Mobile on the road since January 7, 2010. Current assistant coach Ryan Brock was a member of that team and scored 22 points en route to an 82-79 victory.
The Wolf Pack travel to Mississippi to face-off with Blue Mountain College on February 25 at 7:30 pm.
