The No. 25 Loyola Women's Basketball team looked to remain perfect in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) on Monday as they traveled to take on (RV) Auburn University at Montgomery.
Sparked by Fr. G Megan Worry's (Houston, Texas/Lumberton) career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, the Wolf Pack held off a late Warhawks push to earn the 57-54 victory on the road.
Loyola improves to 13-3 on the year and 8-0 in the SSAC with the win. Conversely, AUM drops to 14-6 overall and 5-3 in league play following the loss.
The key statistic of this matchup was the long ball, as Loyola was able to knock down 9-of-18 (50%) from the three point line while the Warhawks managed just 2-of-20 (10%) from deep.
Worry connected on 6-of-9 triples for her 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Jr. F Meghan Temple (Houston, Texas/Klein) added seven points and 11 boards, while Sr. F Adrianne Sloboh (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal High School) chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds in the victory.
Reggotta Craig collected a double-double for AUM (17 points and 13 rebounds) and Jatoria Carter led all scorers with 23 points on Monday.
The Warharks only lead of the first half came at the 3:07 mark in the first quarter before the Wolf Pack took over and began to stretch the advantage. Loyola got the lead as big as 12 points in the second quarter but a 5-0 run to close out the half by AUM brought the Warhawks within seven at 31-24.
At the 4:25 mark in the fourth, Loyola was up by 12 and looking to put the game away. However, costly turnovers down the stretch helped the home team score 11-unanswered points to bring the score to 55-54 with only 57 seconds to play. Up three with just six seconds left, the Wolf Pack missed both clinching free throws to leave the door open for some last-second heroics. Carter had a look as a time expired but was unable to convert and Loyola got the 57-54 victory on the road.
The Wolf Pack return to action on Thursday, Jan. 21, as they host Blue Mountain College for a special "Throwback Thursday" game starting at 5:30 p.m.
