Coming off a victory over Faulkner University on Saturday, the No. 13 Loyola University New Orleans Women's Basketball team returned to The Den on Monday to take on Auburn University at Montgomery in a SSAC showdown. With Sr. G Briana Oglesby (Baton Rouge, La./University Laboratory School) at the wheel, the Wolf Pack downed the Warhawks 67-50 at home.
With the win, Loyola improves to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 in the SSAC. Conversely, AUM drops to 6-2 overall and 1-1 following the loss.
Down 2-0 to start the game, the Wolf Pack scored the next five points to take the 5-2 lead early in the first quarter. With the score knotted up at 8-8, AUM hit a jumper to take the 10-8 advantage with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter. Oglesby sunk two free throws to end the quarter and the scoreboard read 10-10 after the first ten minutes of action.
Down 12-10 to start the second quarter, the home team strung together seven-straight points to regain the lead at 17-12 with 6:30 remaining. The Wolf Pack began to build a cushion in the remaining minutes, ending the quarter on a 12-2 run to take the 27-17 advantage into the locker rooms.
The third quarter saw Loyola keeping the Warhawks at a safe distance for the duration and the home team entered the fourth up 47-33.
Despite three triples in a row by AUM down the stretch, Loyola managed to hold on to earn the convincing 67-52 victory at home.
Oglesby led the Wolf Pack with 18 points in five-of-six shooting from the floor. Getting the start, Sr. F Adrianne Sloboh (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal High School) added 14 points, while Jr. F Caroline Gonzalez(Colleyville, Texas/Colleyville Heritage) chipped in nine points and nine rebounds in the victory.
Loyola returns to action on Friday, Nov. 26, welcoming USCAA Concordia College (Ala.) to The Den for a game set to start at 3:00 p.m.
