The No. 13 Loyola University New Orleans Women's Basketball team looked to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday, traveling to take on crosstown rival Southern University New Orleans in a nonconference matchup. Featuring four players in double figures, the Wolf Pack cruised to an 84-62 victory inside The Castle.
With the victory, Loyola improves to 2-2 on and year, while the Knights drop to 0-3 following the loss.
Jr. F Caroline Gonzalez (Colleyville, Texas/Colleyville Heritage)started the game with a triple and an assist to Jr. F Meghan Temple(Houston, Texas/Klein) to put the Wolf Pack up 8-2 with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter. SUNO battled back to tie the score at 12-12, following three-straight field goals by Londyn Thomas. The score tied three more times down the stretch, before a field goal by Temple and two free throws by Sr. F Adrianne Sloboh (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal High School) put Loyola up 23-19 after the first 10 minutes of action.
A deep triple by Sr. G Brianna Oglesby (Baton Rouge, La./University Laboratory School) followed by a layup from Jr. G Jackie Anderson (San Antonio, Texas/Antonian) gave the Wolf Pack their first double-digit lead of the game, 29-19, with just over seven minutes to play in the half. With Loyola up nine with just over two minutes to go, the Knights ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the Wolf Pack advantage to 33-29 heading into the locker rooms.
Loyola came out after halftime on fire, scoring the first 11 points of the third quarter to stretch its advantage to 44-29 at the 7:12 mark. SUNO cut the deficit to nine points, before a 12-0 run by the Wolf Pack gave the visitors a comfortable 21-point cushion, 56-36, with 2:42 remaining in the third. Loyola held on to the large advantage for the rest of the third and the scoreboard read 61-41 after the first three quarters.
The Wolf Pack stayed in control for the final ten minutes, building the lead as much as 24 points. A field goal by Fr. G Megan Worry (Houston, Texas/Lumberton) off an assist from Fr. F Jasmine Billips (Orlando, Fla./University) as time expired ended the game to give the visitors the 84-62 victory inside The Castle.
Temple led four Wolf Pack players in double figures, recording a team-high 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the floor. Jr. G Kylah Jones (Houston, Texas/Westfield) added 17 points, while Gonzalez notched a double-double (14 points and 12 rebounds) in 27 minutes. Oglesby collected 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and So. G Zoie Miller (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star High School) chipped in a team-high five assists in the victory.
Loyola travels to Ruston on Wednesday, Nov. 18, for an exhibition against DI Louisiana Tech University at 6:30 p.m.
