(Mobile, Ala.) Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball downed NCAA Division II opponent and Jesuit rival Spring Hill College tonight 65-48 in Mobile, Alabama. The Wolf Pack moves to 10-0 on the season following this victory.
Loyola jumped out to a 5-0 lead two minutes into the first half with a driving layup by senior standout Janeicia Neely and a three-pointer by junior Shayne Charles off an assist by senior Rebekah Greer. The Badgers cut the lead to two (10-8) with 11:28 remaining in the first, but the Wolf Pack continued to press on offense, going on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes of play. The Pack extended the lead to 22 points (34-12) with 3:05 remaining in the first and closed out the first half with a 42-22 lead over the Badgers.
Both teams struggled on offense to begin the second half, with only four combined points scored in the first three and a half minutes of the second. An old fashioned three-point play by Rebekah Greer with 16:49 remaining in the game brought the score to 44-24. Neither team would score again until 14:11, when Spring Hill freshman Leah Washington hit a jumper to bring the Badgers within 19 points. Loyola's next points came at 12:30 with a layup by sophomore Meghan Temple. Both teams continued to exchange back-to-back points throughout the rest of the game, resulting in a 65-48 Loyola victory.
Neely and Temple drove the Pack on offense, tallying 13 and 11 points, respectively. Neely also led the defensive effort with six boards, while Templed compiled four rebounds on the night. Greer added nine points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field. Sophomore Caroline Gonzalez notched seven points on 50% shooting and also grabbed four offensive rebounds.
Jennifer Clark led the Badgers on offense with 11 points, while Washington added eight points on 67% shooting. Elissa Vandewaa and Twarner Witherspoon grabbed eight boards apiece to lead Spring Hill defensively.
The Pack will resume action on December 30 when they take on local rival Dillard University at 5:30 p.m. in Dent Hall. This will be the second meeting this season between the Wolf Pack and the Bleu Devils, with Loyola defeating Dillard 73-48 on November 25.
