Loyola women's basketball glides to victory over SUNO behind Temple's double-double in home opener

Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball downed local rival Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) tonight 95-74 in their first home match of the season.

 (New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball downed local rival Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) tonight 95-74 in their first home match of the season. Sophomore Meghan Temple recorded a career-high double-double in the win with 26 points and 14 rebounds in only 28 minutes of play.

The Knights were able to keep pace with the Pack in the beginning of the first half, but Loyola took charge 13 minutes into the game, jumping ahead by eight points with a big field-goal by Temple. Senior Janeicia Neely got off to a quick start, recording 15 points in the first half. The largest lead of the first half (17) came with three and a half minutes left to play in the first half when Neely knocked down a field goal and the Pack went ahead 43-26. Loyola shot a blistering 60% from the field in the first half and led the Knights 45-33 going into the second half.

Temple paced the Pack on both sides of the ball in the second half, compiling 14 points and 10 rebounds. The largest lead of the night (23) occurred with 10:28 left on the clock, when Temple hit a big field-goal assisted by Neely and the Pack took a commanding 67-44 lead. For the remainder of the game the Pack remained at least 15 points ahead of the Knights, going ahead by 23 points three more times. Loyola continued to push the intensity defensively, forcing the Knights to turn the ball over nine times in the second half. The Pack capitalized on these turnovers and ended the game shooting 51.5% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Loyola finished the night with 20 offensive rebounds and 41 defensive boards.

"This was a great win for us against a strong SUNO team," said Head Coach Kellie Kennedy. "It was truly a team effort, and I am impressed with the way we played on both sides of the ball. I am so proud of Meghan for the dedication and strength she showed tonight and Janeicia for showing great leadership and poise on the court."

Neely finished the night with 21 points and four assists, while junior Adrianne Sloboh headed the defensive effort alongside Temple with 12 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Briana Oglesby recorded a career-high 14 points, draining all four three pointers she attempted and shooting five for eight from the field. Senior Rebekah Greer added eight points on 50% shooting.

Brandy Broome drove the Knights (1-1) both on offense and defense, tallying a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. She also notched seven steals and five assists on the night. Victoria Davis and Marquetta Stokes aided the offense with 14 points and 13 points, respectively.

The Pack (1-0) will travel to Houston, Texas this weekend to compete in a round-robin tournament with Dallas Christian College and the University of St. Thomas (Houston). Loyola will take on Dallas Christian on Saturday, November 15 at 12 p.m. prior to a matchup against St. Thomas on Sunday, November 16 at 2 p.m.
