KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics named its Scholar-Athletes for the winter sports this week, and 19 Loyola Wolf Pack student-athletes were honored in the process. Those individuals came from the men's and women's basketball teams, the men's and women's swim programs, and the competitive cheer and dance squads.Â
Â
After earning 15 fall-sports scholar-athletes, the 19 announced on Wednesday move the Wolf Pack Athletics Department's total to 34.Â
Â
To qualify as an NAIA Scholar-Athlete, students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, appear on the eligibility certificate for their sport, and have attended their institution for at least one full year. This year, the list features an impressive number of student-athletes who have met these rigorous standards.
Â
The Wolf Pack men's swim team led the way with six selections, as Logan Gary, Benjamin Chehebar, Dylan Chehebar, Harvey Quiddington, Hayden Sutton, and Sergio Martínez Sanz all got it done in the classroom to earn the honor. The competitive cheer team, men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's swim each had three honorees. Alex Balinbin, Alyvia Pierson, and Zoe Schmit represented the Loyola cheer program; Dominic Brown, Evan Savoy, and Schuyler Pimentel made it from the men's basketball team; Caitlin Travis, Deniya Thornton, and Isabella April were from the women's basketball team; Catherine Streeter, Natalie McLaughlin, and Sarah Ford earned it from the women's swim team. Alexandra Givens represented the competitive dance team as well.Â
Â
All six teams are still in action heading into the championship season. The women's basketball team (24-3) is currently competing in the SSAC Championship after winning the regular-season title, while the men's team (22-7) is also set to compete in the NAIA national tournament. The Wolf Pack competitive dance team is currently ranked No. 2 in the NAIA for average score, and the competitive cheer team is 18th. The men's and women's swim teams will send a combined seven to the NAIA National Championships in March as well.Â
