THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball completed a successful conference road trip on Saturday, defeating Thomas University (Ga.), 86-54, for the team's 10th straight win. The Wolf Pack is now 14-2 overall and 6-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.Â
Â
(RV) Loyola is back in The Den next week for two more league matchups. It'll host Point University (Ga.) at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday before Saturday's 12 p.m. game against Brewton-Parker, which is a part of Loyola Athletics' Hall of Fame celebration.Â
Â
Both teams started the game by shooting the ball well, as the Wolf Pack made six of their first seven shots while Thomas made four of their first five to bring the score to 16-12, Loyola. Deniya Thornton made two 3s, Alissa O'Dell made a 3 and converted an old-fashioned 3-point play, and Caitlin Travis made two field goals on back-to-back possessions during that opening stretch. O'Dell made two more shots to quickly get into double figures, 21-16, but TU finished the opening quarter by scoring the final five points to tie the game after 10 minutes of play. Â
Â
O'Dell started the second quarter with two quick buckets, 26-23, as she started the game 6-for-6 from the field. O'Dell and Travis scored on consecutive trips down the floor a minute later, 30-23, and that was all part of a 14-0 run that pushed the Wolf Pack's advantage to 37-23 with 90 seconds left in the first half. Madi Walters scored her first points, and Tiarra McPipe finished that scoring spree with an and-1. Thomas finally ended the run with a 3-pointer to bring the score to 37-26 at the break.Â
Â
The Wolf Pack outscored the Night Hawks 22-12 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 59-38 with 10 minutes left to play. Deniya Thornton led the team with seven third-quarter points, followed by SeQuoia Carroll's six points, which included a 3-pointer. O'Dell added a bucket in that frame, too, to get to 19 points, and she quickly hit 21 points in the first minute of the fourth quarter.Â
Â
Travis hit another 3 in the early portion of the fourth quarter, and Addison Luker got on the board for the first time as well. Thornton made it two players with at least 20 points near the halfway mark of the final frame, 73-44. Luker, Walters and Kaylee Dublin combined to score Loyola's final 13 points, as the game's result was never in question.Â
