No. 11 Loyola takes Game 1 at Mobile Thursday

The Wolf Pack scored 11 runs in the final three innings to take the series opener over the Rams

MOBILE, Ala. – The 11th-ranked Loyola University New Orleans baseball team is now 20-5 overall and 8-2 in Southern States Athletic Conference play after Thursday night's 15-6 win at Mobile. The Wolf Pack and Rams will meet back up at Jacobs Field for a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m. to finish the three-game set.

The Rams struck first with a three-run first inning, but the Wolf Pack answered with three of their own in the top of the second. Collin Zeringue was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, then he moved into scoring position when Marcus Steen sacrificed him over. Landon Manson reached on an error to put two on base, and Landon Trosclair put Loyola on the board with a two-run triple, 3-2. Brandon Mooney brought home the tying run on a double two batters later.

Cole Romero and Steen each doubled in the third to give Loyola a 4-3 lead, but the Rams countered with two runs in the fourth to go back ahead, 5-4.

After a couple of scoreless frames for the Wolf Pack offense exploded for 11 runs in the final three. It started when they scored four runs in the seventh to regain the lead, 8-5. Trosclair and Jake Mills doubled and singled to start the inning, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mooney evened the game, 5-5. Garrett Felix reached base during the next at-bat, then Romero sent a pitch over the left-center field wall to push Loyola in front by three, 8-5.

The Rams got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Wolf Pack continued to pile it on with three more runs in the eighth and four in the ninth. Mills had a bases-clearing base hit in to give Loyola an 11-6 lead in the eighth, then Landon Manson delivered a three-run home run in the ninth to push the advantage to 14-6. Trosclair scored on a wild pitch later in the frame to run the lead up to 15-6.

Payton Cooper earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief work. Caden Durand entered to pitch in the seventh inning with the score 8-6 and the tying run on base. He struck out the first batter he saw to end the threat and recorded back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to earn the save.
