NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola Wolf Pack men's tennis team competed over the weekend at the 2024 NAIA ITA Gulf Regional Championships, with several players winning matches on Friday.
Most of the weekend's matches were played at New Orleans City Park, with a few being held at the XULA Tennis Center. A full list of results from the regional, including women's results, can be found here.
Spencer Matz played one of the early morning matches Friday at Xavier's courts. Matz rolled past his opening-round matchup, Sebastian Ramanos of Texas A&M Texarkana, 6-2, 6-1. A few hours later, he put up a good fight against Our Lady of the Lake's Kyllian Savary, the tournament's top overall seed, in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.
Another big singles win came from Hippolyte de Preville, who came back from down a set to take down Xavier's Artur Yakubov 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. De Preville also faced OLLU's Savary in the Round of 16, where he lost in straight sets.
Remus Hebhang-Balan and Sam Izrael lost their first-round singles matchups, though they did win matches in the consolation draw. Izrael defeated Yakubov, then OLLU's Matis Nuziere in a tiebreak before falling to consolation draw champion Islam Orynbassar of William Carey.
In doubles, the team of Izrael and Samuel Motazed made the quarterfinals after a strong performance and an 8-4 win against Nour Salah Ibrahim and Matthias Bigot of Dillard. They moved on to face OLLU's top-seeded pair in the quarterfinal match in what would be Loyola's final match of the tournament.
