Baseball earns win No. 15

The Wolf Pack baseball team easily handled Madonna (Mich.) on Tuesday to improve their record to 15-3 overall

WESTWEGO – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team took care of business Tuesday night, handing Madonna University (Mich.) an 11-0 run-rule loss in non-conference action. The Wolf Pack (15-3, 6-3 in SSAC) will hit the road once again this weekend, traveling to Faulkner (15-5, 7-2) for another Southern States Athletic Conference series. Game 1 of the series is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday, then a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12 p.m. concludes the weekend.

After stranding a couple of base runners in the first inning, Loyola didn't waste the opportunity to score in the second. The Pack scored six runs off five hits and an error in the bottom half of the frame, and it started when Payton Cooper tripled off the right-center field fence. Landon Trosclair followed that up with a no-doubter to left field, 2-0, then Aaron Davis continued the inning with a bunt single, advancing to second on an errant throw by the Madonna catcher. Jake Mills singled him home during the next at-bat, 3-0, and he later came home on a fielder's choice, as he beat the throw from second home, 4-0. A couple of wild pitches brought home Brandon Mooney and Marcus Steen to make it a 6-0 lead.

Loyola tacked on five more runs in the third inning to jump ahead 11-0. Cooper started the inning off again, this time with a single, and then Davis walked to put two on base. A wild pitch moved the two over into scoring position, and a single by Mills that hit the Madonna pitcher made it a 7-0 lead. A bases-loaded walk for Jaxon Buratt plated another, 8-0, and an error by the catcher throwing it back to the pitcher after a strikeout gave way to Mills' heads-up baserunning, 9-0. Collin Zeringue and Jed Cambre picked up back-to-back RBI on singles.

Prescott Marsh earned his first career collegiate win with his four-inning performance. He allowed three hits and struck out two while not allowing any free passes in 57 pitches. Carter Holstein pitched and had one strikeout while giving up one hit in the fifth, then Garrett Beadle and Grant Goodbee had clean innings in the sixth and seventh with two strikeouts each to finish off the game.
