WESTWEGO – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball earned its sixth 10-run-rule win of the season on Saturday, defeating Middle Georgia State, 10-0, in eight innings at Segnette Field. The win capped off a three-game sweep of the Knights, too, and it was the Wolf Pack's seventh Southern States Athletic Conference win in a row and ninth win in a row overall.Â
Â
Loyola (26-8, 13-5 in SSAC) is now tied for first in the league standings with Faulkner, and it'll next host non-conference foe Dillard University at Segnette Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Â
Loyola scored one run each in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. In the first, walks for Brandon Mooney and Jaxon Buratt, as well as a single by Collin Zeringue, loaded the bases with no outs. Landon Manson was hit by a pitch after that to bring home Mooney, 1-0. In the second, Aaron Davis tripled off the left-center field wall to start the frame, then a squeeze bunt play off the bat of Jake Mills made it a 2-0 lead.Â
Â
The Wolf Pack scored five runs in the seventh to pull away, 7-0. Mills and Mooney walked to begin the frame, and a single to center by Buratt scored the first run of the inning, 3-0. Mooney later scored on a wild pitch, then Manson doubled to plate Buratt, 5-0. Another double, this time by Tyler Durland, scored Manson, and finally, an error by the Knights' infield scored Durland to finish off the scoring in the inning.Â
Â
Loyola capped off the run-rule win with three more in the eighth to end the game early. Nathan Monceaux started that inning with a pinch-hit solo homer, his second long-ball of the week, then Garrett Beadle had a pinch-hit walk to keep things going. Mooney singled to put two on base, as both moved into scoring on a wild pitch. Buratt ended things with a two-RBI double down the line, 10-0.Â
Â
Prescott Marsh turned in his best start on the bump this season, scattering seven hits during his seven-inning outing. The freshman, who was making his fourth career start, struck out four while not allowing a Middle Georgia baserunner to cross the plate. Matthew Weil pitched an efficient eighth inning on 10 pitches with a strikeout to preserve the shutout win - the team's fifth of the season.Â
