WESTWEGO – For the second time this season, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team has won 10 games in a row, defeating Dillard University, 10-8, Tuesday night to extend its latest winning streak. The Wolf Pack started the season 10-0 for their first run of 10 consecutive wins.Â
Â
No. 14 Loyola (27-8, 13-5 in SSAC) is now set to host Mobile (12-12, 11-7) this weekend for a three-game Southern States Athletic Conference series. Game 1 is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.Â
Â
After the Wolf Pack spotted Dillard a couple of runs in the top of the first, they bounced back to take a 5-2 lead after two innings. Loyola got one run back in the bottom half of the first, as Marcus Steen and Collin Zeringue both walked to put a couple of runners on base. Steen got to third on a failed pick-off attempt by the Dillard pitcher, then after Zeringue walked to put runners on the corners, a double steal play made it a 2-1 game. In the second, Kason Cullins doubled to start the frame and Jonathan Hammer tied the game, 2-2, with a single through the right side two batters later. Brandon Mooney and Steen singled and walked during the next two at-bats, then Zeringue got plunked to pick up an RBI, 3-2. A wild pitch scored Mooney, 4-2, and Landon Manson brought home Steen, 5-2, on an infield single.Â
Â
The Bleu Devils scored two more runs in the top of the third to make it a one-run game, however, the Pack got those runs back with a run each in the bottom half of the third and the fifth. A bunt single off the bat of Aaron Davis scored Landon Trosclair, 6-4, and a groundout by pinch-hitter Jed Cambre brought home Trosclair once again, 7-4.Â
Â
The Wolf Pack put the game away by pushing three more across the plate in the eighth inning. Tyler Durland, Zeringue, Cullins, Davis and Jake Mills all walked in the frame, as Durland and Zeringue made it a 9-4 lead when Garrett Beadle reached on an error and Beadle scored, 10-4, on a bases-loaded walk by Mills.Â
Â
Dillard did make it interesting, though, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth to cut its deficit to 10-8, but Christian Callender got his first career save because he entered in the ninth with a four-run lead and the game-tying run at the plate.Â
Â
Carter Holstein earned his first career Wolf Pack win in relief, pitching 1.2 innings with three strikeouts. Â
