TUSCALOOSA, ALA. – The 15th-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack baseball team returned to Southern States Athletic Conference play on Saturday, earning two wins over the Stillman College Tigers to begin their three-game series. The two teams will meet back on the diamond Sunday at 12 p.m. for the series finale.Â
Â
Game 1: #15 Loyola 10, Stillman 3
Three straight walks for Brandon Mooney, Jaxon Buratt and Jed Cambre started the game off, then a groundout by Collin Zeringue brought home Loyola's first run in the opening frame. Landon Trosclair made it 2-0 in the second with a solo home run, and Aaron Davis gave Loyola the 3-0 lead in the same inning when he came in to score on a bases-loaded walk with Zeringue at the plate.Â
Â
After no runs crossed in the third inning, Loyola blew the game up with a six-run fourth inning. A couple of walks by Buratt and Cambre got things going for the Pack, and the first run scored on an error by the Stillman catcher, 4-0. Zeringue made it a 6-0 lead with a two-run home run, then Kason Cullins, Prescott Marsh and Trosclair loaded the bases with two walks and a single, in that order. Two wild pitches and a groundout off the bat of Aaron Davis extended Loyola's lead to 9-0 before it was all said and done. Trosclair would come home to score on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, too.Â
Â
Stephen Still earned his fifth win of the season with five strong innings. The program's leader in wins and strikeouts fanned six Stillman batters and allowed just one hit throughout his day, as he faced just two over the minimum.Â
Â
Game 2: #15 Loyola 13, Stillman 3
Neither team scored until seven total runs were pushed across in the third inning. Loyola started that spree with a four-run top half before Stillman answered by plating three to make it a 4-3 game. Davis came home first after he led off the inning with a single, then Jake Mills, who reached on an error, made it a 2-0 lead. A double by Cambre scored Mooney, 3-0, and Cambre came home, 4-0, after Zeringue singled to right field.Â
Â
After the Tigers got their three runs, Loyola came back with one run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and another in the seventh to regain the momentum. Buratt reached on a single through the right side, and he stole second base before two passed balls allowed him to cross the plate to give Loyola a 5-3 lead. Another error by the Tigers allowed Trosclair to score in the sixth, 6-3, as he was pinch running for Landon Manson who doubled during his at-bat. Elvin Delic earned his first RBI in a Wolf Pack uniform later in the inning, scoring Ayden Authement to make it a 7-3 lead. Then in the seventh, Authement walked with the bases loaded to score Zeringue, 8-3.Â
Â
The real blow came in the eighth when Loyola plated four more runs. Mooney scored on a passed ball, Cambre came home on a failed pickoff attempt, and Zeringue and Manson each picked up RBI on a single and groundout, respectively, to give the Pack a commanding 12-3 lead. Then Loyola added another run in the ninth for good measure, as Mooney reached on an error to bring home Davis.Â
Â
Nathan Monceaux picked up a second win this week with his four-inning relief performance. He allowed no runs and four hits while striking out three in his four innings of work. The sophomore handed the ball to Grant Goodbee in the eighth, and he struck out a pair and only gave up one hit in two innings as well.Â
