NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola Wolf Pack men's tennis team opened the conference schedule against Mobile at home Thursday, with the Rams taking the match 4-3 in City Park.
Loyola is now 0-4 on the season heading into their next match, a non-conference tilt against Bethel (Tenn.) in Mobile, Ala. Then, the Pack returns home to face NAIA No. 6-ranked William Woods on Thursday, March 6 at noon.
In doubles play Thursday, the Wolf Pack had a chance after Herman Aure and Samuel Motazed won 6-4 on court 3. A Mobile win on court 2 tied things up to make court 1 the decider. Francisco Javier Arce Vieyra and Akhil Indrabalan had match point in a tiebreak, but the top Rams pair came back to win it 8-6 and take the doubles point.
In singles, an injury on court 1 and wins on courts 2 and 6 gave the Rams the four points needed to clinch the match. All of the singles matches played out, however, with the Pack claiming victories on courts 3, 4, and 5.
Remus Hebhang-Balan had the first, winning in straight sets on court 2. The other two matches both went to third set super tiebreakers, with Motazed and Hippolyte de Preville triumphing in both with 10-5 third sets.
