CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team started the Cactus Classic with a matchup against Rocky Mountain University (Mont.) on Wednesday, losing to the Battlin' Bears, 67-38. The Pack (7-5) will next take on Montana Tech at 5 p.m. CST on Thursday in another matchup against teams receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25.
Deniya Thornton scored the first four Loyola points, then an old-fashioned 3-point play by Alissa O'Dell kept the Wolf Pack close, 8-7, with three-plus minutes left. Rocky Mountain finished the first quarter strong and turned that into a 22-10 lead halfway through the second quarter. The Battlin' Bears eventually turned that into a 35-14 lead at the break.
Thornton and MG Lymon scored all of Loyola's third-quarter points to give the Pack a chance, but Rocky Mountain hit a couple of 3s to keep them at bay. Six different players scored in the fourth quarter (Joclyen Wyatt, Kate Thompson, Jada Washington, Alexis Babineaux, Bria McClure and O'Dell), but the Bears closed out the game with another strong quarter.
