Brewer an easy choice for Wolf Pack Hall of Fame

Jasmine Brewer's name is all over the women's basketball record book

NEW ORLEANS – Loyola University New Orleans athletes who etch their names all over the school record books while also helping their team attain success virtually always end up in the Wolf Pack Athletics Hall of Fame. And that's exactly the path that Jasmine Brewer took in four seasons as a guard for the women's basketball team beginning in 2010.

At the time that she was selected as a Wolf Pack Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Brewer had converted the most free throws (467), hauled in the second-most career rebounds (923) and scored the fourth-most career points (1,747) in program history. She remarkably appeared in each of the 123 games the Wolf Pack played during her time at Loyola, helping the team produce a record of 77 victories and 46 defeats – a highly respectable winning percentage of 63%.

Three of Brewer's four campaigns with the Wolf Pack saw the team win at least 20 games as she earned all-conference honors repeatedly and was also named All-America honorable mention in 2012 and 2014. Two of those seasons led to berths in the NAIA national tournament. One of those tournament appearances – in 2014 – saw the Wolf Pack reach the quarterfinals, coming within seconds of obtaining the women's program's first national semifinal berth before enduring a heartbreaking, two-point defeat.

Brewer and the teammates who accompanied her on the national quarterfinal run collectively earned induction into the Wolf Pack Hall of Fame in 2022, but her performance as an individual that year deserves to be set apart as well.

The 271 rebounds Brewer collected that campaign were 23rd nationally and ninth-most in a season for the program. Brewer not only earned a spot on the all-conference team and won recognition on the second-team All-Louisiana list (which includes selections from the state's NCAA programs). She also won "Champions of Character" awards from Loyola and the NAIA, which recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate the values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

Another of Brewer's prominent off-court accolades was selection to Allstate's Good Works Team, which recognized her community service.

Brewer told Loyola's The Maroon student newspaper in 2014 that the awards citing her character and off-court service were uniquely meaningful for her.

"To be honest, I've been blessed to have the talent to play basketball and the drive to work hard, so getting awards for basketball isn't as new to me as getting awards for things off the court," Brewer said.

In that same article of The Maroon, Loyola women's basketball coach Kellie Kennedy summarized the impact that Brewer's career had on the Wolf Pack.

"She just gave her heart and soul to this program," Kennedy said. "We couldn't have done it without her leadership."

At the time, Brewer suggested her contributions couldn't really be considered sacrifices when one realized what the Wolf Pack meant to her.

"We were not just a basketball team; we're a family," Brewer remarked. "We know what makes each other sad, what makes us laugh. I'll miss the road trips, the practices, the comic relief through adversity. That's us. We're a passionate group, so when we have our mind set on something and we want to do it, the way we play is phenomenal."

After leaving Loyola, Brewer became a graduate assistant women's basketball coach at Tulane University where she earned a master's degree in social work. At the time of her Loyola Hall of Fame selection, she was coaching high school girls basketball in her hometown of Houston, Texas.
