Baseball begins series at Middle Georgia

The 12th-ranked Wolf Pack lost both games of Thursday’s doubleheader to the Knights

COCHRAN, Ga. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team continued Southern States Athletic Conference play on Thursday, losing two games to Middle Georgia State, 5-1 and 5-4, on the road. The Wolf Pack (24-14, 9-5 SSAC) and the Knights (18-18, 6-8) will play the series finale on Friday at 12 p.m. CDT.

Middle Georgia 5, #12 Loyola 1

Trailing 3-0, the Wolf Pack had their biggest threat in the sixth inning when Jake Mills started the frame by reaching base on an error. Landon Trosclair followed that up by doubling to score Loyola's first run, 3-1, then Aaron David walked to put two on with no outs. Middle Georgia, however, got out of the jam and added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull away in the seven-inning game.

Middle Georgia 5, #12 Loyola 4

The Pack got the first run of the game in the opening inning, as Brandon Mooney started things off with a walk. Tucker Ganley sacrificed him over to second, then Kason Cullins brought him home with a single to left field, 1-0. Loyola scored three more times in the third inning, which started with another leadoff walk by Mooney. Ganley reached on an infield error to put two runners on base and Mooney later scored on a wild pitch, 2-0, before back-to-back singles by Cole Romero and Cullins made the lead 3-0. Romero came around to score on another wild pitch, 4-0, later in the inning as well.

Loyola only got one more hit through the next five innings, as the Knights battled back to tie and take a lead, 5-4, with a four-run fifth inning and a lone run in the seventh. In the top of the ninth, the Wolf Pack got a leadoff single by Christopher Bohrer and put two runners on base with two outs, but MGA forced a game-ending groundout to first.
