No. 17 Loyola ends regular season Friday

The No. 12 William Carey Crusaders completed the sweep of the 17th-ranked Wolf Pack on Friday, as both teams turn their attention to next week’s SSAC Championship

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team dropped both games to William Carey on Friday, as the No. 12 Crusaders won 12-3 and 13-3 over the 17th-ranked Wolf Pack.

The Pack (29-20, 14-10 SSAC) will now turn their attention to the Southern States Athletic Conference Baseball Championship next week, which takes place on the same field - Milton Wheeler Field. The tournament is set to start on Wednesday, and the schedule will be announced at a later date.

Game 1: #12 William Carey 12, #17 Loyola 3

The Wolf Pack and Crusaders each had nine hits in the ballgame, but the host was able to turn those into 12 runs to take the first game of Friday's doubleheader. William Carey jumped out to a 6-0 lead through four innings, scoring two in the first, one in the third and three in the fourth before Loyola scored twice in the fifth. Landon Trosclair reached on a bunt single, then pinch-runner Tucker Ganley moved into scoring position when Aaron Davis singled to center. Two batters later, Cole Romero singled home Ganley and Nathan Monceaux followed that up with a sacrifice fly to plate Davis, 6-2.

The Crusaders, however, scored five more times in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to bring the score to its final, 12-3. Ross Selvaggi picked up Loyola's final RBI in the top of the sixth when Christopher Bohrer came home to score.

Game 2: #12 William Carey 13, #17 Loyola 3

Loyola took its first lead of the series in the second inning of game two of the doubleheader. After Carey scored the first run in the bottom of the first, Selvaggi blasted a three-run home run to left field to give the Pack a 3-1 advantage. Bohrer and Anthony Fernandez got on base with back-to-back singles prior to Selvaggi's at-bat. The Crusaders, though, answered with a six-run bottom half, taking a 7-3 lead, then added three runs each in the fifth and seventh innings.
