No. 17 Loyola falls in series opener

The Wolf Pack traveled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to close out the regular season against No. 12 William Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The No. 17 Loyola Wolf Pack traveled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to start their final Southern States Athletic Conference series of the season against No. 12 William Carey. On Thursday in the series opener, the Crusaders took down the Pack, 11-1.

Loyola is now 29-18 overall and 14-8 in Southern States Athletic Conference play after the loss. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday to close out the regular season, with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.

William Carey struck first with a three-run second inning, as the Crusaders pitcher held the Wolf Pack offense in check through the first few innings. Nathan Monceaux got Loyola's first hit in the fourth inning, but it wasn't until the fifth that Loyola scored its first run. Trailing 3-0, Jake Mills got something going with a one-out single. After Aaron Davis was hit by a pitch to put two on with two outs, Brandon Mooney reached on an error by the WCU shortstop. The ball trickled into the outfield, and that was good enough to score Mills from second to cut the score to 3-1.

The Crusaders, however, added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, one in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth to end the game early.
