WESTWEGO – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team took on Louisiana Christian University at Segnette Field on Tuesday, playing their first home game in a month. The Wildcats, though, took a lead late and held on to the 5-4 victory for the Wolf Pack.Â
Â
Loyola (15-8, 2-1 in SSAC) will host Brewton-Parker for its second Southern States Athletic Conference series of the season this weekend, first playing a doubleheader on Friday starting at 3 p.m. before the series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Â
Louisiana Christian had to work for its first two runs of the game, scoring the first in the first inning off an infield error and getting its second in the third frame after a long at-bat that ended with a single to center field. LCU would get two more runs in the top of the fourth before the Wolf Pack could get on the board. They scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth, collecting two hits, three walks and one hit by a pitch in the frame.Â
Â
Cole Romero started the fourth with a walk before moving to second on a balk. Anthony Fernandez brought home the first run with a single to center, and he advanced to second during the next at-bat on a stolen base. Tucker Ganley then walked and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before pinch-hitter Ryan Smilair was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aaron Davis walked to make it a 4-2 Wildcats lead, and Brandon Mooney doubled to tie the game, 4-4.Â
Â
However, Louisiana Christian used another Loyola error to score the go-ahead run in the sixth, which was the fourth unearned run of the contest. Loyola had a chance in the ninth, though, getting two on base with two outs, but a groundout ended the game.Â
