TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team was down to its last strike Sunday afternoon in its series finale against Talladega, and sophomore Brandon Mooney delivered for the Wolf Pack. With the three men on base, Mooney hit a bases-clearing double to left field to help give Loyola an 11-9 win over the Tornadoes.Â
Â
Loyola (15-7, 2-1 in SSAC) will next play a non-conference contest against Louisiana Christian on Tuesday, finally returning back to Segnette Field for the first time since early February for the 3 p.m. first pitch.Â
Â
Trailing 9-8, Tucker Ganley got things going in the final inning with a one-out single, and Jake Mills and Brady Morgan followed that up with back-to-back walks to juice the bases. After a strikeout, Mooney stepped up and smacked the 1-2 pitch to left field to score the three runs.Â
Â
The game had a lot of momentum swings for both teams, as the Wolf Pack scored four in the fourth, three in the seventh and three in the ninth. Talladega, however, scored at least one run in six of the nine innings. After the home team went up 1-0 in the first inning, Kason Cullins walked with the bases loaded to tie the game in the top of the second. The Tornadoes, though, scored two in the bottom half of the frame and another run in the third to jump ahead 4-1.Â
Â
In the fourth, Landon Trosclair started the rally by getting hit by a pitch, then Aaron Davis and Mooney walked during consecutive at-bats with one out. Cullins brought home the first run on a fielder's choice, and a single by Cole Romero made it a 4-3 deficit for the Pack. Back-to-back singles by Christopher Bohrer and Anthony Fernandez gave Loyola the 5-4 lead.Â
Â
Talladega answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go back ahead, 6-5, and it scored two in the sixth to extend its lead to 8-5. In the top of the seventh, Anthony Fernandez was hit by a pitch to lead things off, and he eventually made it to third base after a stolen base and a wild pitch. Jake Mills brought him home on a double, then Aaron Davis hit his first home run of the season a couple of at-bats later to tie the game once again, 8-8. Â
Â
Grant Goodbee (1-1) was credited with the win after throwing just two pitches and getting one out in the bottom of the eighth, and Brady Bowen earned his second save of the season with a relatively easy bottom of the ninth.Â
