3/31/2023 4:33:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams continued play at the annual Southern States Athletic Conference Roundup on Friday, taking on the Middle Georgia State Knights, whose women's team is ranked No. 7 while their men's team is No. 9.

In a match that could have gone either way, the Wolf Pack women dropped a tight 4-3 decision, while the Loyola men lost 4-1.

The No. 14-ranked Loyola women's team is now 10-5 this season, 3-2 in conference play, while the men are 7-7, also 3-2 in SSAC competition.

Herman Aure had the lone singles win for the men, 6-2, 7-5 on court 6.

In the women's match, Loyola started out by claiming the doubles point behind strong play from the top two teams. Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez didn't lose a single game in their 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot, and Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salgueiro-Estela wrapped up doubles with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position.

Carpenter and Ponce once again were victorious in singles on the top two courts, both winning in straight sets. Ponce became the first Wolf Pack player to 10 singles wins this season, as she now owns a 10-4 record in singles play.

After Middle Georgia won three singles matches, the result came down to court 5, where Adele Fereres was barely edged out in a third set tiebreak.

The men's and women's tennis squads will finish up the Roundup with a match against Florida National at 10 a.m.
