NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola women's tennis team took on another NCAA Division I opponent on Tuesday, as the Wolf Pack traveled across town to the Privateer Tennis Center to play the University of New Orleans.
The Privateers won the match, 7-0, but the overall match was closer than the overall score might indicate.
"Our women fought very hard today and had a chance to pull a big upset," said head coach Matt Llewellyn." We were very close and this one came down to just a handful of points on all courts. We're not happy with a loss but I'm proud of our mental and physical toughness today."
Reilly Briggs and Avery Frierson were able to score a 6-4 doubles win on Court 3. Loyola was close to securing the doubles point, as Micaela Ponce and Ariana Salgueiro-Estela had two match points but lost in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-5) in Court 2 doubles.
New Orleans won every singles match, but again things were closer than just the overall score, with the Pack forcing third sets in three different matches, including at No. 1 singles where Lucy Carpenter came back to force a third set before falling 7-5 in the decider. Adele Fereres and Leonie Schmidt each won the opening sets of their singles matches on Courts 5 and 6, but the Privateer players came back to take those points.
"Even in a loss this was an important step forward for our team," said Llewellyn. "We will learn from this experience and continue growing."
The Wolf Pack women will continue a tough week in New Orleans with a match against NAIA No. 6 Xavier on Saturday, Feb. 11 at noon.
