Women’s basketball wins at Blue Mountain Saturday

The No. 9 Loyola women’s basketball team added to its win total on Saturday

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – After already wrapping up the Southern States Athletic Conference Regular-Season title on Thursday, the ninth-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team continued to add to their win column on Saturday at Blue Mountain Christian. The Pack took down the Lady Toppers, 73-55, to improve their overall record to 23-1 and their league mark to 16-1.

Loyola will host Spring Hill College for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, as tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. for the program's annual School Day Game.

BMCU actually led after the first 10 minutes of play, taking a 15-14 lead into the second quarter. Sandra Cannady had six of the team's 14 points, and Kennedy Hansberry, Liz Critton, Jazmene McMillan and Taylor Thomas also chipped in two points each to keep Loyola close.

A Hansberry 3-pointer quickly gave Loyola a 17-15 lead in the first 30 seconds of the second, then another 3 by the senior made it a 24-21 advantage a couple of minutes later. The Lady Toppers were able to take a two-point lead before Tera Snell tied the game at the midway point, and Hansberry's third 3-pointer tied it once again, 31-31, with two minutes until halftime. Snell scored again and Thomas finished the first half with a 3, which allowed the Pack to go into the break up 36-31.

The Wolf Pack built a six-point lead early in the third quarter, but Blue Mountain kept things close. Loyola would hold a two-possession lead multiple times throughout the 10-minute frame, but the hosts would answer to bring it back down to a one-possession game, eventually tying it at 47-all with one minute left. Two Cannady free throws and a score by Thomas gave Loyola a 51-47 lead entering the fourth.

It was all Wolf Pack in the final 10 minutes, outscoring BMCU 22-8 to pull away from their counterparts. A 3 by Thomas pushed the lead to 57-49, then a 3 by Cannady made the score 60-49 with seven minutes on the clock. Cannady got to 20 points a couple of minutes later, 65-49, and from there, Loyola continued to add to its lead while holding the Lady Toppers to minimal scoring.
