NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team claimed their 28th straight win in The Den on Tuesday, defeating Spring Hill College, 96-47, for their annual School Day Game. The ninth-ranked Wolf Pack is now 24-1 overall and they'll take a 16-1 Southern States Athletic Conference record into their final league game.Â
Â
Loyola, which has already wrapped up the regular-season title, will return to SSAC play on Saturday for its season finale and Senior Day against Life University. Tip-off for that contest is set for 12 p.m. in The Den, and the seniors will be honored immediately after the game and prior to the men's game starting.Â
Â
Kennedy Hansberry and Jazmene McMillan combined to make three shots inside the key to start the game for the Wolf Pack, 6-2, then five quick points for Sandra Cannady made it an 11-4 lead less than four minutes into the game. Hansberry made a 3-point shot a few moments later, then Taylor Thomas and McMillan each scored to push the advantage to 18-12 with four minutes left in the opening quarter. Another quick five points for Cannady not only gave her 10 points in the game already but also made the score 23-12. She wasn't done either, as this week's SSAC Player of the Week honoree made one more shot to bring the score to 25-12 after 10 minutes of play.Â
Â
Spring Hill didn't score in the final 4:33 of the first quarter, and it didn't get its first points until the 8:13 mark of the second, as Loyola took a 29-12 lead during that time. Tay Cannon scored four of Loyola's first six points of the second, and Morgan Hervey got on the board to extend the lead to 33-15 at the halfway point. Thomas got hot to end the quarter, too, scoring six points in a two-minute span to make it a 44-23 lead at the break.Â
Â
Cannady made a shot and a free throw in the first minute of the second half to put her at the 20-point mark for the third straight game, 47-23, then McMillan and Cannady each turned steals into fastbreak scores a couple of minutes later, 56-27. Loyola forced nine Spring Hill turnovers in the quarter and finished on a 23-7 run to race out to a 73-34 lead with 10 minutes left.Â
Â
Isabella April and Kate Petrovic got their first points in the fourth quarter, both coming on 3s, as the Wolf Pack ran away with the game.
