Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 9 Loyola wins annual School Day Game

With hundreds of students from Holy Name of Jesus School in attendance, the Wolf Pack took down Spring Hill College on Tuesday in non-conference action

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team claimed their 28th straight win in The Den on Tuesday, defeating Spring Hill College, 96-47, for their annual School Day Game. The ninth-ranked Wolf Pack is now 24-1 overall and they'll take a 16-1 Southern States Athletic Conference record into their final league game.

Loyola, which has already wrapped up the regular-season title, will return to SSAC play on Saturday for its season finale and Senior Day against Life University. Tip-off for that contest is set for 12 p.m. in The Den, and the seniors will be honored immediately after the game and prior to the men's game starting.

Kennedy Hansberry and Jazmene McMillan combined to make three shots inside the key to start the game for the Wolf Pack, 6-2, then five quick points for Sandra Cannady made it an 11-4 lead less than four minutes into the game. Hansberry made a 3-point shot a few moments later, then Taylor Thomas and McMillan each scored to push the advantage to 18-12 with four minutes left in the opening quarter. Another quick five points for Cannady not only gave her 10 points in the game already but also made the score 23-12. She wasn't done either, as this week's SSAC Player of the Week honoree made one more shot to bring the score to 25-12 after 10 minutes of play.

Spring Hill didn't score in the final 4:33 of the first quarter, and it didn't get its first points until the 8:13 mark of the second, as Loyola took a 29-12 lead during that time. Tay Cannon scored four of Loyola's first six points of the second, and Morgan Hervey got on the board to extend the lead to 33-15 at the halfway point. Thomas got hot to end the quarter, too, scoring six points in a two-minute span to make it a 44-23 lead at the break.

Cannady made a shot and a free throw in the first minute of the second half to put her at the 20-point mark for the third straight game, 47-23, then McMillan and Cannady each turned steals into fastbreak scores a couple of minutes later, 56-27. Loyola forced nine Spring Hill turnovers in the quarter and finished on a 23-7 run to race out to a 73-34 lead with 10 minutes left.

Isabella April and Kate Petrovic got their first points in the fourth quarter, both coming on 3s, as the Wolf Pack ran away with the game.

Pack Facts

  • Sandra Cannady turned in a career performance with her 16th double-double of the year, totaling 27 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, two assists, and a block in just 24 minutes played. She was 11-of-17 from the floor, 1-of-1 on threes, and 4-of-6 at the free throw line for her highest scoring output in a Wolf Pack uniform.

  • Cannady was not Loyola's only double-double on the day, as Kennedy Hansberry posted 11 points with 10 assists. It's the third double-double of Hansberry's career, as she also had one in each of the last two seasons.

  • Taylor Thomas (15 points, eight assists) and Tay Cannon (12 points, nine rebounds) were also close to double-doubles. This was Loyola's second game in a row with two players having double-doubles, with Thomas and Cannady also reaching those marks last game.

  • Cannady and Cannon each moved up on the all-time rebounds list in Loyola's record book. Cannady is up to 590 total rebounds, ninth-most in Wolf Pack history, while Cannon has 585 career boards, 10th-most in program history.

  • Loyola has now won 28 games in a row against Spring Hill.
