HAMMOND, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's basketball team made the short trip to Hammond on Saturday to take on Southeastern Louisiana for its second of two exhibitions against NCAA Division I opponents this season. In Loyola's first game in nearly two weeks, the Lions won the matchup, 87-64.
The Wolf Pack resumes regular season and conference play next Wednesday when they host Dalton State at 5:30 p.m. in The Den.
Braelee Albert gave Loyola a brief 3-2 lead with a 3-pointer in the first 90 seconds, but SLU was still able to jump out to a 10-3 lead a couple of minutes later. Albert scored again, then two free throws by Alex Hammond and a hook shot by Eddie Burgess cut the early deficit to five, 15-10, with more than 12 minutes left in the first half.
Zachary Lee scored the next six points for Loyola, making it a 20-16 game, but Southeastern closed the final eight-plus minutes of the first half on a 22-11 run to take a 42-27 lead at the break. Albert scored two more times during those closing minutes, and Brody Adams and Kameron Johnson each made their first field goals of the game.
Albert became the first Wolf Pack player in double figures, scoring his 11th point in the opening couple of minutes of the second half. Milan Mejia and Albert both hit 3s after that, but the Lions still led 53-37 after four minutes of action. Leonard Jackson made one from long-range, too, but SLU went up by 21, 63-42, moments later.
Hammond was the second player for Loyola to score double digits, as the Lions led 77-54 with six minutes left in the game. Troy Thomas entered the game late and scored five points, including a 3-pointer, but Southeastern cruised to its win.
