NEW ORLEANS – The ninth-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team made things look easy on Saturday, defeating the Middle Georgia State Knights 109-39 in The Den for the team's 10th straight win and fourth Southern States Athletic Conference victory of the season. Loyola was just five points away from breaking the program record for margin of victory, too, as the 2014-15 squad currently holds the record with a 75-point win over Dallas Christian College.
The Wolf Pack (10-0, 4-0 in SSAC) will close out 2022 with one more home contest, hosting Brewton-Parker College at 2 p.m. on Monday for an SSAC matchup.
Loyola started the game with 27 first-quarter points on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor, also MGA shot 21.4 percent from the field to trail 27-11 after 10 minutes. The quarter was highlighted by Tay Cannon joining the 1,000-point club, catching a lob pass from Kennedy Hansberry and laying it in mid-air to give Loyola a 26-9 advantage. Cannon's six points in the opening frame led the Wolf Pack, while Hansberry and Jazmene McMillan each chipped in five points.
The Pack shot even better in the second quarter, making 13 of their 18 shots to score 33 points in the 10 minutes prior to halftime. Loyola also held the Knights to 2-of-16 shooting, forcing eight turnovers to take a 60-17 lead at the break. Sydni Tangle hit two 3-pointers in the second as well, and Hansberry, McMillan and Sandra Cannady all went into the locker room with double-digit points to power Loyola's high-scoring offense.
In the second half, the Wolf Pack continued to extend their lead far beyond the Knights' reach, scoring 49 points to Middle Georgia's 22. Behind Taylor Thomas' 15 second-half points and Jada Farrell's five points and five rebounds in six minutes of play, the Pack dominated the Knights. When the buzzer sounded, Loyola claimed a 70-point victory over Middle Georgia, their greatest margin of victory of the season.
