Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 14 Wolf Pack dominates from start to finish Tuesday

Tuesday’s win marks the first 7-0 start for the women’s basketball program since the 2014-15 season

ALEXANDRIA, La. – The 14th-ranked Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball team continues to look impressive in the early portion of the 2022-23 season, dominating LSU Alexandria, 98-43, Tuesday night to improve its record to 7-0.

After a two-game Southern States Athletic Conference hiatus, the Wolf Pack is set to return to league action next Thursday, playing host to William Carey at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 1.

The Wolf Pack started the game by going 5-for-5 from the floor, including a 3-pointer by Taylor Thomas, to take a 13-5 lead and prompting an early LSUA timeout. Liz Critton scored twice in that early stretch and Sandra Cannady added four points as well to help Loyola take the eight-point lead less than four minutes into the game. Free throws and a layup for Cannady kept things going for the Pack, 17-5, then after the Generals ended the 13-0 run, Thomas hit another 3 and Jazmene McMillan scored to make it a commanding 22-8 lead with three minutes left in the opening frame.

Loyola finished the first quarter 11-for-19 from the floor, including 3-for-5 from the 3-point line, to hold a 29-9 advantage after 10 minutes of play.

The Pack kept it up in the second with another 20-plus-point quarter. Tay Cannon and Sydni Tangle made it a 24-point lead, 33-9, in the first minute of the frame, then a combination of Kennedy Hansberry, Cannon, Thomas and McMillan pushed it a 29-point game, 45-16, a few minutes later. Jada Farrell got in on the action late in the quarter, then after another 3-pointer by Thomas, Cannady extended the lead to 56-25 with a pair of free throws.

The team would go into the break with a 60-25 lead after shooting 66.7 percent (22-for-33)  from the floor through 20 minutes of play.

Loyola outscored LSU Alexandria 22-10 in the third quarter, as McMillan scored five in the first four minutes while Cannady, Hansberry and Critton all each had a field goal, too. After Cannon socred, Kate Petrovic made it a 48-point lead, 78-30, with less than three minutes left, and Jada Washington brought the score to 82-35 by the end of the frame.

When it was all said and done, the Pack had 13 different scorers in the contest to help secure the dominant win.

  • Taylor Thomas was second on the team with 15 points scored, her fourth contest this game registering at least 15.
