PINEVILLE, La. – The No. 14-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team won their sixth straight game to open the season, defeating Louisiana Christian 62-49 on the road Monday. The win makes the Pack 6-0 overall with another away non-conference contest set for Tuesday night against LSU Alexandria.
It was a struggle at first for the Wolf Pack, missing their first nine shots through the first four and a half minutes of the game. Louisiana Christian, however, couldn't take advantage as Loyola forced two turnovers while the Wildcats missed four shots of their own to only hold a 5-1 lead during that time. After Sandra Cannady got on the board, LCU did push its lead to 10, 15-5, but four points from Tay Cannon and a Kate Petrovic 3-pointer brought the host's lead to 17-12 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Taylor Thomas and another 3 from Petrovic cut the deficit to two, 19-17, early in the second quarter, then Thomas hit a 3 of her own at the three-minute mark of the frame to give Loyola its first lead, 21-19. Thomas finished with 13 second-quarter points, including two more 3s to help give the Wolf Pack a 29-24 lead at the break.
Six points from Cannady kept things going for Loyola early in the third quarter, 36-25, and a 3-pointer by Kennedy Hansberry gave the Pack their largest lead of 14, 39-25, midway through the frame. LCU closed the third quarter on a 9-2 run, though, to keep things interesting with 10 minutes to play, 41-34.
Scores by three different Wolf Pack players, Jada Farrell, Tera Snell and Thomas, quickly built the lead back up to double digits, 47-36, two and a half minutes into the final frame. After free throws kept Loyola ahead by a sizable margin, Thomas made two more 3-pointers for good measure down the stretch to finish off the win.
