The Wolf Pack faced the No. 9 Gold Rush in the opening round at the SSAC Championship Tournament, which started Thursday in Mobile, Ala.
MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans tennis season came to a close Thursday, as the sixth-seeded Wolf Pack fell 4-0 to the third seed, Xavier, in the opening round of the SSAC Men's Tennis Championship at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Loyola finishes the 2021 spring season with a 2-10 record.
It was another tough task for the Wolf Pack, who faced ranked NAIA opponents in half of the team's matches this season, as well as four matches against NCAA DI programs. The Gold Rush accounted for two of the ranked matchups, as they were No. 2 in the season opener and No. 9 for the postseason match.
Tiger Cheung and Samuel Marin were locked in a close battle at No. 1 doubles against Juan Varon and Juan Ramirez, down 4-5, but the match remained unfinished after Xavier won at the other two doubles positions to claim the doubles point.
In singles, the Gold Rush won on Courts 2, 3, and 4 to clinch the match. Ernesto Telles was going toe-to-toe with Xavier's Jered Wilson in a rematch of their three-setter from February, but the match went unfinished at 6-6 in the first set.
