The Wolf Pack women defeated their first ranked opponent of the season with a 4-0 result over the No. 18 Rams. The men lost 4-1 to the No. 12 Rams.
MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams battled the University of Mobile Saturday in the last matches of the 2021 SSAC Round-Up.
The Wolf Pack women's team won their second match of the competition at the Mobile Tennis Center, a 4-0 result over the NAIA No. 18-ranked Rams, for their first ranked victory of the season. The men's team fell 4-1 to the No. 12 Rams.
Lucy Carpenter and Fatima Vasquez continued a great week at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-3. They've lost just twice this year as a doubles pairing through seven matches. In singles, their impressive play continued. Vasquez opened up singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win on Court 2, followed by Carpenter's 6-3, 6-3 victory on Court 1.
Manuela Alban clinched the match for Loyola, winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. She and Selma Fereres also teamed up to win 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.
The Wolf Pack women's team defeated the Rams for the first time in 2018. Since then, Loyola has strung together three consecutive victories against Mobile. They finished the 2021 SSAC Round-Up with a 2-2 record, after wins against Blue Mountain and Mobile.
Loyola's men's team went 0-4 at the Round-Up, after facing three teams in the top 12 in the nation. The lone singles win for Loyola came from Aubin Duchier, who took on the NAIA's No. 11-ranked singles player, Boris Klingebiel, and won 6-4, 7-5. The Wolf Pack also got a doubles win from Tiger Cheung and Theo Debackere in a tiebreak on Court 2, but Mobile won on every other court to come away with a 4-1 match victory.
Both Wolf Pack squads will return to Louisiana for a Wednesday matchup against NCAA DI school New Orleans. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the UNO's University Tennis Center.
