Wolf Pack tennis teams each earn first victory of 2021

Both the men's and women's teams took down ranked opponent Lewis-Clark State to claim the season's first wins

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams hosted Lewis-Clark State Saturday at City Park, and each team claimed their first victory of the season.

The No. 21 Wolf Pack women showed why they are still deserving of a Top-25 ranking, after earning a 6-1 result over the Warriors, who are ranked just outside the top 25.

"Our women wanted to show that we are still one of the best teams in the country," said Loyola head coach Matthew Llewellyn. "We have felt a bit disrespected this year having not been able to play many matches yet still dropping in the rankings. We have a lot more work to do to accomplish our goals for this year. We took a step forward today, played well, and got a much needed team win."

The Warrior men's team was ranked 24th in the country coming into this match, but Loyola played well, earning their first win over a ranked team since March 30, 2018 when the men beat a 24th-ranked St. Thomas (Fla.) team.

"Our guys stepped up to the challenge of playing a ranked team," Llewellyn said. "We've been working towards this opportunity and I'm very proud of our total team effort today."

Both matches started with Loyola securing the doubles point, winning matches on two of the three doubles courts.

In the women's match, the Pack won the first three points in singles, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 Court 2 win for Fatima Vasquez and a match-clinching Court 6 victory in straight sets for Selma Fereres. Manuela Alban also won in straight sets, while Lucy Carpenter and Mathilde Camus won in three.

The Warriors were able to get singles victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots in the men's match, but Loyola won on every other court, including a 6-2, 7-5 match clincher from Samuel Marin on Court 3.

"We're all very grateful to LCSC for coming down to New Orleans," Llewellyn said. "Credit to them for playing a lot of tough tennis over a couple days. Both LCSC teams were class acts."

Next up for the Wolf Pack is the SSAC Round-Up, which starts Thursday in Mobile, Ala. Loyola will take on conference opponents Blue Mountain, William Carey, Middle Georgia, and Mobile.
