The Loyola tennis squads will look to bounce back on Feb. 20 against Bethel
NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams opened up the 2021 spring season Monday with a challenging matchup at the XULA Tennis Center against crosstown rival Xavier.
Xavier, picked atop both the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Men's and Women's Tennis Preseason polls, won both matches 7-0 to begin the conference schedule.
Though the two schools normally meet for an annual early-season matchup, this was the first dual match between the two schools since Xavier joined the SSAC as an affiliate member over the summer.
The freshmen duo of Ariana Salqueiro-Estela and Selma Fereres claimed a 6-3 doubles victory on court three near the end of the women's match. That was the only win for the No. 15 Wolf Pack women's team, however, with the No. 3 Gold Nuggets securing wins on every other court in singles and doubles, earning a 7-0 result.
Xavier's men's team, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, also recorded a 7-0 victory. Herman Aure and Noah Banken teamed up in doubles to win 6-4 on court three for Loyola, but Xavier won every other match on their home courts. Aure and Ernesto Telles each won the opening sets of their singles matches on courts five and six, but they were defeated in third-set super-tiebreakers.
The next match for both the Loyola men's and women's tennis teams is scheduled for February 20 in Mobile, Ala., when the Wolf Pack will look to bounce back against Bethel University.
