Box Score 2 The Wolf Pack baseball team is hosting No. 9 Freed-Hardeman this weekend, losing both games Saturday with two more to play Sunday against the Lions
WESTWEGO, La. – The Loyola Wolf Pack suffered two losses to the No. 9 Freed-Hardeman Lions Saturday, starting the day with an 8-1 loss before losing a close second game 4-1.
The Wolf Pack (5-5) was supposed to be in Texas this weekend playing different opponents, but instead, they're playing four games at home against Freed-Hardeman (4-5), as the two finish the series with another doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
GAME 1: No. 9 Freed-Hardeman 8, Loyola 1
The Lions put crooked numbers on the board in the fourth and fifth innings to build an 8-0 lead on the Wolf Pack. Wyatt Lankford got the start for Loyola, allowing one run in the first inning before pitching 1-2-3 innings in the second and third. Freed-Hardeman, though, got to Lankford in the fourth inning, pushing across three runs to end the senior's day.
The Wolf Pack offense had chances to score in the early innings before finally scoring a run in the fifth inning. They combined to leave five base runners on base through the first four innings, as two of those runners were stranded in scoring position and one Wolf Pack base runner was thrown out at home after a base hit.
Before Loyola could score, however, FHU plated four more runs in the top of the fifth to pull away from the Pack. Trailing 8-0, Loyola finally found a timely hit, as Michael Calamari's single in the fifth inning scored Payton Alexander for Loyola's lone run.
GAME 2: No. 9 Freed-Hardeman 4, Loyola 1
Trailing for most of the game, Loyola brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth for a chance to win the game. Allen Dennis started the inning with a double, then moved to third during the next at-bat. Peyton Lacoste and Tucker Ganley walked in back-to-back at-bats with one out, but a game-ending double play to the shortstop crushed any hopes of a Wolf Pack comeback.
Brett Fisackerly got the start for the Wolf Pack and struck out a career-high 10 FHU batters over his 6.2 innings of work. He gave up three runs - two earned - off seven hits and a walk, as the Lions scored two in the third and one in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead early.
Ross Scelfo cut FHU's lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning, notching a pinch-hit single to score Ganley, who singled to lead off the inning. The Lions, though, scored an insurance run in the ninth inning.
Pack Facts
With a single and a double in Game 1, Payton Alexander extended his on-base streak to 35 games. However, that streak, and his streak of nine games with a hit to start the season, were snapped in Game 2.
Brett Fisackerly set a new career-best with 10 strikeouts. He had seven combined strikeouts in the two previous games this year.
Patrick Crifasi drew a walk in Game 2, so his on-base streak is now at 20 games.
