PLAINVIEW, Texas – The No. 23 Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team avenged last night's loss, capturing a 68-58 victory Friday over the Our Lady of the Lake Saints in the Queens Classic.
It was the first win of the season for Loyola (1-1), which opens conference play next week with a road matchup against Middle Georgia State on Nov. 18 at 4:30 p.m.
The team's leading scorer in both games this season, Tay Cannon scored the first point of the game on a free throw. Kennedy Hansberry and Sydni Tangle each knocked in three-pointers in the opening period, but the Saints held a 20-19 lead after one quarter.
Cannon made four layups in the second quarter, and she was responsible for half of the team's points in the period. Six more came from Kate Petrovic, who drained back-to-back triples in the middle of the quarter. Loyola outscored their opponents by one point in the frame, and the teams went into halftime tied 35-35.
Coming out of the break, both teams had a low offensive output in the third quarter, with each team putting up just 13 points in the frame. Tera Snell hit two jumpers in the opening minutes of the quarter, but the Wolf Pack and Saints would only make five shots each in the period, and the score was tied 48-48 heading into the fourth.
An and-one opportunity for Hansberry opened the fourth quarter, and she converted the free throw in a period where she was a perfect 5-for-5 from the stripe. Loyola never trailed in the final 10 minutes. The game was tied at 53-53 with just under five minutes left, but the Wolf Pack outscored the Saints 15-5 in the final minutes, capped off by four-straight free throws from Hansberry to seal the win.
